XI. FOLK TALES — GHOST STORIES

ANGNGALO was a giant, the like of him was never seen. His size could be imagined by looking at his footstep on the left bank of the Abra River as one goes down to Banaoang. He used to fish on the Abra River, for we can still see the stone with which he weighed his "barecbec." Said stone is a hazard to rafts going down the river, and is on the rapids just before "Carsuan," the entrance into the Banaoang gap from Abra's side, it is said that he now lives over the clouds.

ANGKIRARAB was his wife. Little is known about her aisde from the belief that she lived in Bantay Bulagao. And when Mount Bulagao is capped with clouds in the morning, there is always rain in the afternoon.

[p. 39]

AL-ALIA is the llocano term for "ghost." Many old men and women claim to have seen or heard genuine "al-alia"; and many were the stories told which raised up the hair in fright. An "Al-alia" is supposed to be the spirit of a dead person. These stories account for the fact that to this day, the cemetery is neglected, the graves are never cared for, and no one can be seen in the cemetery before sunrise and after sunset.

SAIRO (devil) is said to have appeared in various ways to old people. They say that it appeared as an extraordinarily big dog, or some animal in certain trees; or as a beam of light (like in a flashlight), or as a lamplight on the high branches. The "sairo" may also tell its presence by shaking the branches of a tree, or breaking a big branch when there is no strong wind. The trees inhabited by "sairo" were sacred. Offerings of food were placed near the trunk, and the tree was never cut. The "baleti" tree with its thick foliage and cavernous trunk was especially marked as the home of "sasairo." (The belief is now fast declining.)

Some old people claim to have heard a "sairo" beat a drum, the sound of which was as high as the eaves of the houses. It beat a warning to put out the fire from the tamarind near the public school buildings now towards the cemetery.

STORYTELLING

Before the introduction of many readers, of magazines, of novels, people delighted in telling orally stories which they have heard and to which their ingenuity had added life. One famous storyteller from Tayum was Tomas Alverne, who won the friendship of the headhunters in the mountains by his stories. And the women of those braves vied with each other in giving presents of tobacco to said Mr. Tomas Alverne, that those with better gifts were nearest fo him when he told his tales.

Other people sang their tales as those who told the story of LAM-ANG.

Many of the tales told long ago bear resemblance to the fairy tales told by Grimm and the anecdotes found in many American Readers. But some of them were original. The story of "Bernardo Carpio" that is the same as that of the Tagalog story, was of Filipino authorship. The high cost or scarcity of writing materials at that time may be the reason why many original stories were not preserved in writing, and now forgotten.

In compliance with Memorandum No. 34, s. 1852 of the Director of Public Schools, dated at Manila on April 28, 1952, | am herewith forwarding copies of the History and Cultural Life of the Municipality of Tayum, Abra, Philippines.

We, the teachers of the Tayum Schools, entrusted the compilation of the data appearing in this paper to Mr. Manuel D. Having supplied him with the scanty data we could gather, he set to work supplying from his store of experience whatever data we failed to give him. The whole work is all his. He tried his best to put only facts that were corroborated by reliable sources.

Respectfully submitted,
