HISTORY OF GONZAGA

The Ilocos Province is one of the most thickly populated regions of the Philippine Islands. Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union are in the Ilocos Region. This region is narrow in comparison with the Central Plains.

The people are engaged mostly in agriculture. As the people were industrious and didn't have enough land to cultivate, some migrated to some other places. Some went to the central provinces and some to the Cagayan Valley.

Around the year 1900, immigrants began to settle in the northeastern part of Luzon. And from year to year, groups of immigrants settled. The place those people occupied was called Gampao. That name remainedn for sometime. At the time, the settlers became conscious of politics and they changed the name of the place. They called in Wangag instead of Gampao. This place was a barrio of the town of Camalaniugan.

In the year 1916, a barrio within the territory of Camalaniugan became a town. The town is what is now called Buguey. Wangang, which was a barrio of Camalaniugan, became one of the barrios of Buguey. The name of the barrio ws changed again. Rumang-ay was the new name. The people of Rumang-ay, who were increased by yearly settlers, became politically intoxicated. In fact, the late Francisco Torres, a resident of Rumang-ay, was the first president of Buguey.

A place which had only a handful of people in 1900 grew to be a big barrio to the year when Buguey separated as an independent town from Camalaniugan. The people thought of the hardship of being in a barrio but more of its geographical situation.

[p. 2]

The town of Buguey and the barrio of Rumang-ay were separated by at least twenty kilometers. There were no roads and bridges that connected the town and the said barrio. When some inhabitants of Rumang-ay wanted to go to Buguey, they went hiking most of the way and most of the time. Twenty kilometers meant a half-day hike in those days.

As they experienced these hardships, their political aspiration to become a separate independent town from Buguey increased in folds. They wanted their dreams to be realized. And it was not so far away from Buguey's political separation from Camalaniugan. It was two years, then. In other words, it was in 1918 when Gonzaga was recorded as a town in the province of Cagayan. The barrio of Rumang-ay gave way to the town of Gonzaga. The word Rumang-ay was erased from the record and the word Gonzaga took its place.

Buguey and Gonzaga were not the only places that aspired to be independent towns. As we observe that they were once barrios and now, they are two separate and independent towns. Buguey is the mother town of Gonzaga. It did not take long for that town to lead Gonzaga to be a town. Palawig, a barrio of Gonzaga in the northeast corner of the community as well as the province of Cagayan and the island of Luzon, grew bigger and bigger as time went on. The people got more conscious of their political situation. By the year 1950, the dream of the people of Palawig that someday, it would become an independent town was realized. On March 6, 1950, the inauguration of the town was held. So, in that year, Gonzaga, a daughter of Buguey, became a mother town of Santa Ana, the new town.

The territory of Gonzaga was divided between herself and the town of Sta. Ana. Her population was reduced to a certain extent. However, Gonzaga remained to be as before in regards to some lines. She is growing hand in hand with some other towns in the province.
