Don Julian de Cuenca, owner of this estate, gave a piece of land to the Dominicans for the construction thereon of a residence or convent for retirement or solitude, in the same manner as the Franciscan Fathers had done in San Francisco del Monte. The donation was perfected took place, during which the church and the convent were burnt, all papers and old records concerning the donation and foundation of the house as well as referring to the benefactors or donors were converted into ashes. In the year 1641, the first donation was duly re-acknowledged by Captain Don Santiago Castela and his wife, Dña. An Marquina, then the new owner of the estate.

A Historical Sketch of the Holy Cross of San Juan
[p. 9]
convent of San Juan del Monte. This convent, however, did not last very long, for it was destroyed during the Chinese revolt of 1639.
There was at that time in Parian a life-size image of Christ crucified which had been made at the order of Rev. Fr. Bartolome Martinez. His express order was that the image was not to be worked upon until he had given his comment, which he gave only when — in devout prayer, he cruelly lashed himself.
The Chinese revolt also brought about the destruction of the church and convent in Parian, but thanks to the quick action of the devotees of the Holy Cross, the image was served from the fire, although in the haste and confusion, the head was broken off and lost. The image was taken to the convent of Sto. Domingo, where it was completely repaired.
In 1641, Rev. Father Sebastian Oquenda, O.P., Prior of Sto. Domingo, reconstructed the church and convent of San Juan. The new church having been completed, Fr. Oquendo decided to send the image of the Holy Cross there because it was too large to be accommodated in Sto. Domingo.
Devotion to this image soon spread rapidly in the city of Manila on account of the many miracles brought by it. The faithful's enthusiasm was such that a few outstanding gentlmen of the city decided to organize the Confraternity of the Most Holy Cross of San Juan del Monte, with the aim of propagating further the devotion to this sacred image. In order to perpetuate this particular cult of the Holy Cross, the founders of the confraternity agreed to contribute five hundred pesos each to provide for a High Mass that was to be sung perpetually every Friday of the year. This is the origin of the Holy Cross which, up to this date, is always celebrated in our church every Friday throughout the year.
With the passing years, the devotion to the Holy Cross of San Juan has not diminished. This is amply proved on May 3rd every year when all the faithful of San Juan turn out to celebrate the big feast in honor of the Sta. Cruz de Mayo. When, in 1942, the old Sanctuary was finally made into a parish by His Grace, the Archbishop of Manila, the number of Holy Cross devotees increased.
